Synopsis
Lazar is the editor of a publishing house on the edge of financial disaster. One day, quite unexpectedly, a girl who claims to have devilish origin visits him. She brings an old and well-preserved book in Latin language which on its margins contains undiscovered verses of Konstantin Miladinov, a famous 19th century poet. The next day, the author formerly published by Lazar‘s publishing house – the young intellectual and prodigy-like, Marko Kovački – disappears in Split, Croatia. With the mysterious book in his hands, Lazar begins his own search for Marko‘s new manuscript which he has been finishing while is announced as a missing person. A search leads Lazar through the multi-layered history of the Balkans and it becomes a struggle for something more important than the initial aims he has had. „Sphinx of anger“ is Kujundjiski‘s fifth novel, which combines history, mythology, mystery and invistigation elements linked with contemporary current events in the region and beyond.
Moving between the boundaries of mystery and literary thriller, Žarko Kujundjiski (Spectator, America) creates an intriguing and cleverly conceived novel, a genre and style palimpsest, with which he approaches unexplored areas of our prose.
