Skopje in the High Zone

The story collection Skopje in the High Zone is composed of four cycles, in which the stories are mainly related to the city of Skopje, and the events take place in various time periods: from an indeterminate past to the possible manifestations of the future. The narratives, thus, follow the changes in the urban space, as well as the transformations of the customs, culture, human relations, power structures in society, the value systems and life in general. Some stories are characterized by the realistic approach, while others are dominated by irony and self-criticism, others still have elements of fantasy, science fiction or oniric elements. Some of the stories reimagine several traditional Balkan folk tales, demystifying, deconstructing and re-interpret the traditional patriarchal stereotypes and power structures. The last cycle contains flash fiction or short short stories, which provide complex and nuanced image of specific moments and challenges from contemporary life, as well as dreams.
