Kalina Maleska

Kalina Maleska is a Macedonian writer and professor of English literature at the “Blaže Koneski” Faculty of Philology, Ss. Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje. She writes novels, short stories, and literature for children.

Her novel The World I Chose received the Novel of the Year Award for 2024, awarded by the Foundation for the Promotion of Cultural Values “Slavko Janevski”. Her short stories have been translated into several languages and published in magazines and anthologies in the country and abroad. Her short story “A Different Kind of Weapon” is represented in the anthology Best European Fiction 2018.. Two of her stories for children have been adapted for the stage and performed by the theatre for children Shadows and Clouds..

Maleska is also the co-editor of the international collection Awake not Sleeping: Reimagining Fairy Tales for a New Generation (2021), organized and published by UN Women (ECA), in which she is also represented with two short stories. She is the editor and co-author of the study Kon-tekstot: Digital Reviews (Macedonian Literature in the First Two Decades of the Twenty-First Century)(2023), and co-editor of the edition Visualization of the Contemporary Macedonian Literature (2024).

Maleska teaches Utopian and Dystopian Narratives, Postcolonial Literature and other courses related to Anglophone Literature. She works in the area of literary theory and criticism, and her articles related to literary research have been published in domestic and international academic journals.

In the area of literary translation, some of the works she has translated from English into Macedonian are: Tristram Shandy by Laurence Sterne Selected Stories by Ambrose Bierce, Small Things Like These by Claire Keegan Free: Coming of Age at the End of History by Lea Ypi.
